COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT)
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates volunteers in disaster preparedness involving hazards that potentially impact communities by training in basic disaster response skills, fire safety skills, light search and rescue skills, disaster medical operations, as well as team organization. Since its inception as a national program in 1993, there are over 2,700 local CERT programs, with more than 600,000 volunteers trained. The CERT Program offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely upon during disaster situations, allowing local emergency responders to focus on more complex tasks. CERT volunteers are trained to respond safely, responsibly and effectively to emergency situations, while also supporting communities during non-emergency events. The Teen CERT Program (minimum age 16) aims to train students in emergency preparedness and basic response in order to develop the skills necessary to protect themselves and assist others in the event of an emergency. The CERT basic course is delivered in the community by a team of first responders and other qualified volunteers. The organization and timing of training and meetings varies from program to program, often offered during two- to four-hour blocks over a series of evenings and/or weekends. Becoming an East Hanover CERT member will give individuals a unique opportunity to not only serve the community, but also be better prepared to assist their neighbors and families as well. Registration applications can be found at OEM@easthanovertownship.com under the link for Forms.
